Margaret Louise Whitfield

Margaret Louise "Peggy" Whitfield, 80, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away

peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Peggy was born March 14, 1946, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, to Harold and Ruth

Callaway. She moved to North Carolina as a young woman and spent 34 years

teaching third grade at Belmont Elementary, where generations of students

knew her for her patience and her endless supply of construction paper.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the

choir and helped organize the Wednesday supper for more than two decades.

Peggy loved her garden, strong coffee, and any excuse to feed a crowd.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Raymond Whitfield; her

daughters, Susan Whitfield Barnes of Raleigh and Diane Whitfield of

Roanoke Rapids; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was

preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Thomas Callaway.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening at Hockaday Funeral &

Cremation Service. A service of remembrance will be held Friday morning

at First Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Belmont

Elementary library fund.
