Steve Kent Taylor, 84, of Roanoke Rapids, went to his heavenly home peacefully in the comfort of his earthly home, surrounded by his wife of 51 years, Millie, and his four children, on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Mr. Taylor was born on October 27, 1941, to the late Beatty Keeter and Raleigh “Tom” L. Taylor. Steve was a 1960 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, he played baseball and basketball, his basketball team had at least 4 games scoring over 100 points making them an all-star team. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, spent 31 years with American General Insurance, and was an avid golfer.

Music was a special part of Steve’s life, particularly his love for Southern Gospel music. In May of 1975, Steve began his journey singing Southern Gospel music. Over the years, he shared his gift with multiple gospel groups and became known for his smooth bass voice, which became a familiar and cherished sound to all who heard him sing. For the last 19 years, he was a member of Steadfast Quartet, a group that held a very special place in his heart.

His lifelong dedication was recognized on November 1, 2025, when he was honored as a “Living Legend” in Southern Gospel Music in Eastern North Carolina. This was a tremendous honor for a man who never sang for recognition. He sang because he loved the Lord and loved sharing the plan of salvation through music.

Surviving include his wife, Millie B. Taylor, of 51 years whom he loved fiercely ; his sons Joel Taylor (Sarah) and their children Dillon, Rylan, and Noland of Roanoke Rapids and John Williams (Lori) and their children London, Mackenzie, and Stella of Roanoke Rapids; his daughters Gina Williams (Randy Birdsong) and her children Christie, Michael, and Sterling of Roanoke Rapids and Tina Johnson and her children T.J., Christiana, Jacob, and Hannah of Willow Spring; his brother Craig Taylor (Anne) of Powhatan, VA; his sister Penny Rudolph (David) of Deer Park, WA; 12 great- grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer a special word of appreciation for the dear friends who became family to Steve and Millie over the years. Donald and Sharon Gregory and Donald and Pat Sadler were more than friends; they were a cherished part of Steve’s life and a source of love, friendship, and support throughout the years especially during his recent illness. Their kindness and unwavering presence will always be remembered and deeply appreciated.

The family also extends heartfelt gratitude to Steve’s compassionate caregiver, Latoya, whose gentle care, kindness, and dedication brought comfort and peace during his final months. He always met her with a smile. Her compassion and loving presence meant so much to Steve and his family, and they will forever be grateful for the care she provided.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Matthew Smith, Rev. Randy Martin, and Rev. Donald Gregory officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church, prior to the service beginning at 12:30 PM until the funeral hour.
