Walter James Williams, Sr., 68, died at his home on Lake Gaston July 3, 2014.

Mr. Williams was born July 19, 1945 in Portsmouth, Va. to the late Robert Hall Williams, Sr. and Nellie deKeyzer Williams. Mr. Williams served in USAF as a medic during the Vietnam War. He retired from First Citizens Bank and Jefferson Pilot Financial. He had a passion for the outdoors, and wrote outdoor articles for the Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald for many years. He was also the founder and president of Troublefield Hunting Club. Mr. Williams was a member and past master of Royal Hart #497 AF&AM of Littleton and Widows Son #519 AF&AM of Roanoke Rapids. He was a 32nd Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Valleys of Enfield and New Bern, NC. Mr. Williams was also a past member of the American Legion, Weldon Business Bureau, Lions Club and American Heart Association. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brothers, Adrianne Johannas Williams and Howard Roscoe Williams. Mr. Williams is survived by his wife Linda Midgette Williams; his son Walter James Jimbo Williams, Jr.; his daughter Margie Joanna Williams Mabrey and husband Jeff; his grandson Justin Allen Mabrey; granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Mabrey and fianc Timothy Dwayne Brown; and great-granddaughter Selena Nicole Brown. Mr. Williams is also survived by his brothers, Robert Hall Williams, Jr. and wife Ann of Hampton, Va.; and Harry Lee Williams and wife Barbara of Roanoke Rapids; his sister Margaret Ann Jordan and husband Dennis of Kenly, NC. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graveside services with Masonic Rites will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, July 7, 2014 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service and other times at the home of Dan Williams. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St. Oxford, NC 27565.
