Vesta Elizabeth MayfieldLuper, 86, of 65 Old Towne Drive, A4,Roanoke Rapids, N.C. died December 26, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
She was born June 1, 1923 in Walton County, Georgia to the late James Orell Mayfield, Sr. and Lilla Mae Mitchum Mayfield.
Libba was a devoted loving wife and mother; she was a very loving, giving and compassionate person who knew how to make anyone who met her always feel at home and feel like part of the family.
She loved the Lord and worshipped at Victory Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, when she was able to attend.
We thank God for her loving, giving, sweet ways. A woman with a big heart full of love and a faith that helped sustain her through the loss of her two very dear sons and a beautiful granddaughter.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters: Dorothy Davis, Frances Arrington and Florence Smithwick; brother: Orell Mayfield; sons: Thomas Wesley Arrington and Gary Reid Arrington; granddaughter: Andrea Lamb.
Mrs. Luper is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Charlie Luper of the home; daughter: Cindy Sewell and husband Mike of Roanoke Rapids; son: Douglas Luper serving in the United Coast Guard, stationed in Washington, DC and wife Mara of Alexandria, VA; stepson: Tim Luper and wife Sylvia; step daughters: Betsy Nagy and Joan Lucas and her husband Paul all of Rocky Mount, NC; sisters: Alma Peek of Monroe, GA, Mae Felton and husband Jesse of Chesapeake, VA, Jean Stallings and husband Kermit of Red Oak, NC, Violet Williams of Buckhead, GA; brother: Jesse Mayfield and wife Mary Ann of Buckhead, GA. She was a loving grandmother of 18 and great grandmother of 24. There are also many nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Rocky Mount Memorial Park in Rocky Mount, NC. The family will receive friends Monday, December 28, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Services and other times at the home of her daughter, Cindy Sewell, 1309 Johnston Street.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Victory Baptist Church Building Fund, 338 Roanoke Avenue, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Halifax Regional Medical Center for their kindness and caring attitude during Libbas recent hospitalizations..
