Thomas David Lloyd, 84, died at Halifax Regional Medical Center on September 15, 2009, after a long illness.
Born November 5, 1924 in Warrenton, N. C. to his late parents: Percy Lloyd, Sr. and Nellie Gray Lloyd Carroll.
Thomas attended Indiana Central Vincennes University and Ball State University to obtain his certified teachers degree. He owned and operated an upholstery business in Indianapolis, Indiana, for 31 years. Thomas retired from teaching vocational upholstery at Pendleton Maximum Security Prison in Pendleton, Indiana, 1990.
He was chosen Indiana Teacher of the Year, 1983 and selected as Boss at Pendleton Maximum Security Prison in 1985. Thomas proudly served our country during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Paula Fredia Schlussler; a son, Leslie Wade Lloyd; one sister, Elma Lloyd Stewart; five brothers, Nathaniel Macon Lloyd, Edward R. Lloyd, Roy E. Lloyd, Joseph A. Lloyd and Percy Lloyd, Jr.; two half brothers, William Harvey Carroll and Arnold Sinclair Gray; step-sons, James Ray Gray, Jr., one step-grandson, Lewis Preston Sutton, III.
Those left to cherish his memories are his dear, devoted wife of 10 years, Flossie Letchworth Lynch Lloyd; one son, Gregory Alan Lloyd and wife Ruth Christie, of Indianapolis, Indiana; Oral Vade Lynch, Sr. of Roanoke Rapids, N. C., and Jimmy Mark Lynch, of Raleigh, N. C.; one step-daughter, Linda Lynch Gray, of Gaston, N. C. ; one step-granddaughter, Cathy E. Lynch, of Roanoke Rapids, N. C.; three step-grandsons, Oral V. Lynch, Jr. of Durham, N. C., Justin N. Lynch of Raleigh, N. C., and Eric P. Sutton, of Gaston, N. C. ; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Wold Perkins Lloyd, of Missoula, Montana.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. officiated by Rev. Tony Smith and Rev. Dennis Gregory. Entombment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, N. C.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, September 18, 2009 from 7 to 9 P.M. and other times at the home, 100 River Road South in Roanoke Rapids.
