Obituary

Samuel "David" Carter, 75, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2026 in his home surrounded by loved ones. Mr. Carter was born on January 25, 1951 in Halifax County, the son of the late Annie Mae Carter and Jimmie Vernon Carter.  He was also preceded in death by his son David Lynn Carter, a sister Ethel Burnette, two brothers Robert (Bobby) Carter and Wayne Carter, and his sisters-in-laws Miss Hilda Wheeler, MaeBelle Carter and Teresa Carter.

David would have been married to his sweetheart for 57 years on the 9th of August. He retired from KapStone papermill after 43 dedicated years. He was an avid fisherman and shared his love of the sport with his grandkids. He also enjoyed hunting with some of his grandsons. David loved swinging on his porch swing and rocking in his recliner while watching western reruns. His favorite hobby was maintaining his '55 Chevy Bel Air and participating in car shows with the StrayCats Club. He was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church, and shared his Love of our Lord with anyone he could.  

Surviving include his wife Edith Jones Carter, his special mother-in-law, Jackie Jones, his children:  Darlene Kea (Stephen) and Jessica Dilley (Sean), his brothers Vernon Carter and Dannie Carter, his sister Ruth Ann Butts, his grandchildren:  Corey Carter, Jacob Darrah, Hunter Carter, Colby Kea (Amber), Jocelyn Darrah, Abbey Kea, and his step grandchildren:  Tyler Kea, Colton Dilley, and Alexis Shifflett.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 7, 2026 in Maranatha Baptist Church with Pastors Mike Little and Tony Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.
