Robert Lewis White

Robert Lewis White, 93 of Sam Powell Dairy Road, passed away Wednesday April 5th at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. White was born in Halifax County on May 9, 1918 to the late William M. White and Carrie Brewer White. Robert grew up on farm near Brinkleyville. Lewis was also preceded in death by three brothers: William Ray White, Joseph Dorson White, John Jay White and two sisters: Mary Elizabeth Shearin and Dorothy Taylor.

Robert was married to Elsie Powell White for 55 years. He is survived by his daughter Roberta White Thompson and her husband Gerald of Roanoke Rapids, niece Amy Ricks and her husband Wayne of Roanoke Rapids, nephews Bob White and his wife Nancy of Easley, SC, Merle White and his wife Jenny Hyman of Durham, Dorson White and his wife Leslie of Pinehurst, David White and his wife Carmen of Kill Devil Hills and special care giver Mary Whittaker of Roanoke Rapids.

Robert was a World War II veteran who serving from 1941 thru 1945. He served in the Marshall Islands and Oahu, Hawaii. When he returned from the war he found work in the textile industry where he worked for 49 years. Lewis was an avid cattle farmer who maintained a herd well into his eighties.

Robert was a long time member of Smith United Methodist Church and was also a long time member of the Smith United Methodist Church Mens Club.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, April 8, 2012 at Smith United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Schwartz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 8:30 P.M. Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home of his daughter, 249 Overlook Drive.
