Raymond Howard Wood

Raymond Howard Wood, 83, died Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Wood was born in Halifax County, November 8, 1930, to the late Herman Wood, Sr. and Claudia Newsome Wood. He graduated from William R. Davie School and later joined the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict era where he sailed the Coral Sea; as well as Shanghai; he loved being on the ship. He loved fishing with his grandchildren, giving fresh picked flowers to strangers, antiquing, and loving everyone he met. Mr. Wood was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Those left to cherish his memory are, his son, Raymond Howard Buddy Wood, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids; daughters, Julia Shearin and husband, Henry of Littleton, Susan Rolfe and husband, Eddie, Sandra Wood, both of Roanoke Rapids, and Amy Wood of Fort Mill, SC.; brothers, Herman Bubba Wood, Jr. and Ronnie Wood; sisters, Hazel Wells, Edna Council, Addie Simone and Claudia Neal, all of Roanoke Rapids, and the mother of his children, Laura Faye Wood; seven grandchildren, Michael Harp, Chris Rolfe, April Rolfe Shaw, Jonathan Matt Young, Morgan Wright, Joshua Shearin, and Alex Wood. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Saturday, November 8, 2014, from 12-1:30 pm and all other times at the home of Susan Rolfe. Pastor Dennis Gregory will conduct funeral services at 2:00 pm in the chapel at Hockaday immediately following the visitation. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family wishes to give heart-felt thanks to the staff at Community Home Care and Hospice who made the transition for the family much easier.
