Paul Hazelwood Joyner Jr

Paul Hazelwood Joyner, Jr., died peacefully Thursday, May 16, 2013.

A native of Weldon, he was born June 18, 1929 to the late Paul Hazelwood Joyner and Esther Allsbrook Joyner. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Joyner Maddrey, and a brother, Richard Thurston Joyner.

An honorably discharged army veteran of the Korean War, he graduated from East Carolina University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Business. He then worked for Equifax Services for many years as a field service representative and retired as Assistant Tax Supervisor for Halifax County in 1994, after more than 15 years of service.

He was a lifelong member of Weldon Baptist Church, most recently serving as a trustee. He was also an active member of the American Legion, Shaw-May Post 38. During his retirement he thoroughly enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time with his granddaughters, and tending to his rental properties.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ida Ruth Hedspeth Joyner; his sister, Nina Joyner Berkley and her husband Ray of Etowah; his daughter, Lynn Joyner Walker and granddaughters Emily Carolyn Walker and Katherine (Katie ) Ruth Walker all of Roanoke Rapids; one niece and several nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 20, 2013 at Weldon Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Thomason officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon. The family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8:00 P.M. Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.
