Paul Clarence Pete Luter, III, 68, of 106 Western Drive, Roanoke Rapids, N. C. flew to meet his Lord during a skydiving accident in Florida on Friday, March 19, 2010.

Pete was born April 25. 1941, to the late P. C., Jr. and Mable F. Luter. He was a 1959 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School. He served in the U. S. Navy. He was an employee of Champion International Paper for 20 years, and in 1978 began his own business, Countryside Interiors, Countryside Chimney Sweeps, and Countryside Bicycles, where he remained active until his death. He was very active in the Chimney Sweep Association and served as President of the National Guild. He also was one of the starting founders of the North Carolina Chimney Sweep Guild, and served as its President for several years. Pete had been skydiving for approximately 50 years and had received many first place honors in competitions throughout the country. He was the 763rd person to receive a D license which is the highest rating attainable. For many years he enjoyed delivering the U. S. flag via parachute to the First for Freedom celebration on July 4th. Along with his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his aunts, Margie Holloway and Edith Rawls, and his uncle, Oliver D. Fitts, Jr. Pete lived life to the fullest and enjoyed doing things other people had only dreamed of doing. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 44 years, Emily Miles Luter; his children Kenneth B. Luter (Debbie), and Paul C. Luter, IV (Jamie); grandchildren, Candace Luter of Fuquay-Varina, and Brian Luter of Nashville; sister, Ann Bromby (Craig) of Raleigh; aunts, Elizabeth Fitts and Mary Johnson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilson Miles (Lois) , Morene Little (Bobby), Nora Warren (E. C. Fats), Mary M. Williams, Ellis Bo Miles (Ethel), Dorothy Ennis (Jim), Charles Miles (Jonnie), Don Miles (Rachel), Betty Clary (David), Edna Miles, a host of special nieces and nephews and a worldwide family of Chimney Sweeping and Skydiving friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 P.M. Tuesday, March 23, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids which is handling the arrangements, and other times at the home. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. at Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Ricky Barnes officiating. The family will also receive friends after the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends of Moratock Scouters, 155 Old Farm Road, Roanoke Rapids, N. C. 27870.
