Oliver “Gene” E. Haskins, 92 of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s house surrounded by family on Sunday June 1, 2025. Gene was born on November 11, 1932, in Halifax County. He was preceded in death by loving wife of 69 years Peggy Coons Haskins, his parents Ovid and Lila Haskins, his brothers William “Bill” Haskins, Donald Ray Haskins, Al Haskins, sisters Sally Davis, and Rochella Hux.
He is survived by his daughters Yvonne Doughtie (Emery), Lisa Oliver (Butch), and Teresa Hux, sisters Brenda Warren (Howard), Connie Spense, grand children Lauren Doughtie, Sara Long (Ramah) ), Tommy Oliver (Miranda), Alyson Cooke, Ashlee Hux (Danny), Taylor Joyner (Noah great grandchildren Harper Long, Bradley Long, Rylen Barbrey, Kieran Barbrey, Penelope Holcomb, Ramona Brabham, Daphne Brabham, Aela Joyner, Sam Joyner and numerous nephews and nieces.
Gene served his country in the United States Navy (1951-1955) aboard the USS Henrico at US Naval Base Del Coronda in San Diego California, he played softball for JP Stevens “Little Bombers” team. He drove gas tankers for Newsome Oil company and Builders transports.
The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday June 4, 2025, from 10:00am to 10:45am at Hockaday Funeral Home, a service will follow at 11:00am in the chapel and burial will be at Quankie Baptist Church Cemetery Pastors Randy Martin and Jason Yeatts presiding. Family will also receive family and friends on Monday June 2, 2025 starting from 2:00pm till 6:00pm at 410 Sunset Avenue, Roanoke Rapids, NC.
