Maynard Lyles

Maynard Lyles, 84 of Charlotte Street, died Sunday, October 28, 2012, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lyles was born September 9, 1928, in Halifax County, N.C., to the late Rupert Lyles and Mattie Watts.

Mr. Lyles served from 1947 to 1950 in the North Carolina National Guard. He retired from J.P. Stevens after 43 years of service. He then worked along side his sons at Twin City Roofing until he became ill in 2008. However, his most beloved career was that of Santa Clause, Mr. Lyles worked for many years at Becker Village Mall, church functions, visiting families in their home, and in the Roanoke Rapids Christmas Parades. He was also a member of the AMVETS and the Good News Baptist Church.

Mr. Lyles was a beloved brother, husband, father, and grandfather who loved to dance and make others smile.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Gilliam Lyles of the home; one brother, Rupert H. Lyles, (Margaret), of Boyce, VA.; four half -brothers, Gene Watts, (Betty); Walter Watts, (Betty); Jessie Watts, (Mary Ann), all of Roanoke Rapids, N.C; Wilbur Watts, (Joyce); of Newport News, VA; five sons, Danny, (Diana); Larry, (Brenda); Alvin (Shari); and Allen Lyles,(Martha), and Douglas, all of Roanoke Rapids, N.C; four grandchildren, Danny Ray Lyles, Tina Lyles, Crystal Lyles, and Jennifer Jordan; five great grandchildren.

The family will receive Tuesday, October 30th at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and all other times at 748 Charlotte Street.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 31st, at 11:00 A.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids conducted by Rev. Luke Walker..
