Mrs. Gurley was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and enjoyed cooking. She was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church and the Cameron Hasty Circle.
She was born February 19, 1919, to the late Neatom L. Braswell and Annie England Braswell. She was also predeceased by her husband, George Gurley, Sr., her brothers and sisters: Aaron Braswell, Estelle Oakley, Lewis Braswell, Bertha Ramsay, and Martha Baker.
She is survived by her son, George Gurley, Jr. Butch and wife, Barbara, of Roanoke Rapids; her daughter, Sandra Shell and husband, Tony, of Glen Allen, Virginia; brother: William H. Braswell and wife, Emily, of Surf City, North Carolina; her sister: Rachel Barton and husband, Bob, of Hastings, Michigan; her grandchildren: George Buster Gurley, of Roanoke Rapids; Kris Gurley of Knightdale; Tracy Henderson and husband, Matt, of Mechanicsville, Virginia; and Tony Shell, Jr. T. J. of Richmond; her great grandchildren: Meagan Henderson and Katyelyn Henderson; and a number of nieces and nephews and adopted family members.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 2, 2012, at 2:00 P.M. at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with the Rev. Jim Bell and Rev. Bob Clyde officiating. Inurnment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M.
