Mary Elizabeth "Nita" Birdsong

Mary Elizabeth Nita Birdsong, 61, died at her residence Wednesday, May 14, 2014.

Nita was born in Norfolk, VA February 16, 1953 to Rosa Lee Birdsong Mumford. She was the proverbial Do-it-yourselfer, who was very artistic and loved crafts and creating things. She loved all animals, especially her cats, and was an avid story teller to the children who surrounded her. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Willie J. Birdsong and Mary E. Birdsong; brothers, Edwin Butch Birdsong and Robert E. Bobby Birdsong, Sr and special aunt and uncle, Mildred and Curtis Massey.

Surviving is her mother, Rosa Lee Birdsong Mumford of Rich Square; brother, Steve Spanky Spangler of Hurt, VA; sisters, Linda Gibson and husband, Jimmy, of Altavista, VA, Rose Peanut Huff and husband, Dave, of LeMoore, CA, Loretta Bailess and husband Carroll of Hurt, Va., and Delores Pulliam and husband, Gary, of Roanoke Rapids; special friend, Linda Sue Babb of Roanoke Rapids, special cousin, Brenda Duncan, of Roanoke Rapids, and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces, and great nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Following the visitation, Rev. Rick Gaskins will conduct graveside services in Old Cedarwood Cemetery at 1:00 pm.
