Marion Francis Tompkins, Jr.

Marion Francis Tompkins, Jr. 86, died Monday morning, September 9, 2019 in his Roanoke Rapids home.

Mr. Tompkins was born in New Hanover County on October 15, 1932, the son of Marion F. Tompkins, Sr. and Fannie Margaret Harrington Tompkins.

He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War.  Following his military service, Mr. Tompkins began working with Champion International, retiring as a shipping foreman following 34 years of service.  He was a 32 ^nd Degree Mason and also a Shriner.  During his free time he enjoyed both fishing and traveling.  Mr. Tompkins attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Stone Tompkins, whom he married on  March 11, 1950; his son and daughter-in-law, Timothy Gardner Tompkins and Shonna, of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jesse Gardner Tompkins and Anna Victoria Urben;  a sister, Dorothy Tompkins; and a brother, Henry Webster Tompkins and wife Betty.

Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 pm – 1:45 pm Friday, September 13, 2019 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.  The funeral service for Mr. Tompkins will follow at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.  Entombment will follow in the Tompkins mausoleum at Cedarwood Cemetery.
