Mrs. Madge Overstreet Hazelwood, 82, passed away Friday, December 19, 2014 at Sentara Nursing Center in Barco, NC. She was born September 4, 1932 in Lizton, Indiana.
Madge met, and married her loving husband, William L. Hazelwood, Jr., better known as Bill, in California on September 6, 1958, while he was stationed there with the U.S. Navy. They moved to Danville, IL, where they lived until their move to Roanoke Rapids, NC in 1960. Bill began working with Champion International and remained with Champion for 25 years in Roanoke Rapids until he was transferred to Iron Mountain, Michigan in 1985 where he continued to work until his retirement.
Bill and Madge always loved the beach and made the decision to move to The Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1991. They both loved and enjoyed their new home and being able to walk along the beach whenever they had the time.
Mrs. Hazelwood is preceded in death by her father, Bruce Overstreet; her mother & stepfather Ann & Wayne Henry; her sister Nita Carter; her brother Carl Overstreet; her precious grandson; Marcus Twisdale; her mother and father-in-law, Virginia M. & William L. Hazelwood, Sr.; and her sister-in-law, Alice Faye "Bootsie"Hazelwood.
She is survived by her husband, William L. Hazelwood, Jr. of Harbinger, NC; her daughters, Mikki Ann Twisdale and husband Mark of Raleigh, NC; Gay Duke of Jacksonville, NC and husband Allen of Stem, NC ; her sons, Charles Chuck Lewis of Maryland; William L. Hazelwood, III Billy of Clearwater, FL.; and James R. JimBob Hazelwood of Nags Head, NC; grandchildren, Heather Twisdale Simpkins and husband Patrick of Raleigh, NC; Amanda Duke Lipesak and husband Frank of Jacksonville, NC; William Joshua Josh Hazelwood and wife Candance of Hampstead, NC; Kelly Hazelwood House and husband Harry of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and Leslie Hazelwood Zook and her husband of Ohio. She is also survived by a brother, Mickey and wife Betty Overstreet of Danville, IL; a brother-in-law, Lowell Carter of Chesterton, IN; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Bobbi Hazelwood Willis of Greenville, NC. Mrs. Hazelwood is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews; her life-long friend, Marlene Burgin of Fort Worth, TX; and her special loving family member, her Yorkie, Pepper.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:30 pm prior to the service also at the funeral home.
