Lenora Gertrude Powell Satterthwaite Clary

Gertrude lived a long life to the wonderful age of 98, and after a brief illness, passed at her home.

Gertrude was born on October 20, 1927, in Roanoke Rapids, to the late A.M. Powell Sr. and Nina Hawkins Powell. After a happy childhood and graduation from William R. Davie School, she attended Louisburg College to study business and then returned home to start her career in the banking industry. She met he first love. George Satterthwaite Jr., in 1950 and built a home near her birthplace. They began their family with the birth of their adored son, George Dewey Satterthwaite, III in 1959, but tragedy entered their happy home when Dewey passed at the age of 8 in 1967. After this unthinkable loss she turned to taking care of her mother and eventually returned to the banking world.

In addition to her parents and her husband George and her son Dewey, Gertrude was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Lee Powell and his wife, Jesse, H.Z. Powell and his wife, Elsie, John D. Powell and his wife, Irene, A.M. Powell Jr. and his wife, Janie, Clarence H. Powell and his wife Shirley, A.W. Powell Sr. and sisters Sallie Uzell Bachle and husband, Bud, Bula Crawley and husband Stan, Charlotte Ann Kerr and husband Ed, Gertrude was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Left to survive Gertrude is a sister-in-law, Theresa Powell, her faithful and loving caregiver, Katrina Alston, numerous nieces and nephews and the second love of her life, Carl Daniel Clary, she met after being widowed for several years and they started a beautiful love story of travel, dancing, friends and fun until her illness, where their love continued with care and kindness shown until she gently transitioned to her heavenly home with Jesus.
