Obituary

Karen N. Mason, 64, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away on Tuesday, June 16th, 2026, surrounded by her husband and kids at ECU Health Medical Center. Karen is survived by Bryan, her husband; Lee, her son; Amanda, her daughter; Kendall and Wesley Gillam (daughter and son-in-law); Kaya Gillam (granddaughter); Missy and Mark Anderson (cousin and husband); Ciara and Zac Hare (niece and husband); Loretta Mason (mother-in-law); and numerous other cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by Bob and Ruby Nicely (parents), Debbie Molaison (sister), and other precious family members.

Karen was born in Covington, VA, and grew up in the Hopewell and Chester areas of VA. She met Bryan while attending a community softball game. She moved to Roanoke Rapids, NC in 1989 with her husband and kids. She was happiest when spending time with her family, especially with her granddaughter. She loved cuddling with her cat, Luna, when she allowed it. She loved making memories and keeping traditions, she and Bryan started when their kids were young. Karen enjoyed reading and watching Hallmark movies. She enjoyed sitting in the living room with a cup of coffee, visits from her mother-in-law, Loretta Mason, discussing and laughing about life. A graveside service will be held to celebrate her life on Friday, June 19th at 11 am at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. All arrangements will be held through Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Services of Roanoke Rapids. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to your local SPCA. Karen loved all animals and would cry at the commercials when they came on; she would love that, too.

A large thank-you to the nurses in the ER and on the third floor at ECU North, and to the physicians who cared for her while she was there. You were amazing. Thank you also to the nurses and staff at ECU Health Medical Center for all the care and compassion shown for our wife/mom.
