John Ervin Vinson, 82, of Hamilton Street, passed away Monday, April 6, 2015 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

John was born November 4, 1932 in Halifax County to the late John Quincy Adams Vinson and Bertha Mae Barnes Vinson.He was also preceded in death by his sisters: Gladys Wall, Martha Polk and Nadine Tuck: his brothers: Luther Vinson and Elijah Vinson.

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.He loved reading his Bible and was an avid coin collector. He worked at J. P. Stevens until they closed and then worked for the City of Roanoke Rapids.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Rachel Beam Vinson whom he dearly loved;his son: Robert Daniel Vinson and his wife Lisa of Youngsville, NC; his daughters: Rachel Marie Lowe and her husband Jesse of Gaston and Melissa Rock Newsome of Roanoke Rapids; his sisters: Linda Coker of Gaston, Dorothy Bryant of Burpin, TN and Eunice Widener of Gaston; his grandchildren: Tommy Norris, Jr., Randy Norris, Hope Yandle, Bear Newsome,Hunter Vinson, and Caleb Vinson; his great grandchildren: Tyler Yandle, Phillip Yandle, Isabella Newsome, Riley Norris, Seth Norris and Haley Duncan; and a favorite cat Snowball.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 10, 2015 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Pastor Jeremy Kobernat officiating.The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 P.M. Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the funeral home and other times at the home.Burial will follow in Old Cedarwood Cemetery.
