John J.C. Carter (“Jim”) passed away peacefully in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, on Sunday, April 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born in Moultrie, Georgia on February 21, 1934.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife and soulmate Barbara Johnson Carter, of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; his beloved daughters, Marie Carter Warren, Judith Gaborik Aldridge (deceased), Susan Elizabeth Carter, Susan Lynn Padgett, and Donna Padgett Lorence (deceased); his grandchildren, Stephen Gaborik, Nicholas Aldridge, Zachary Aldridge, “his girls”, Olivia Lorence, Lauren Ranspach, and Julia Ranspach; his great grandchildren, Jasper Gaborik, Naya Gaborik, Georgia Aldridge, and Naomi Denton, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
He was also preceded in death by his parents Columbus and Marie Carter, and siblings, Eugene Carter and Donald Carter.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose love for his family was evident in everything he did. He always made time for those he loved and never hesitated to lend a helping hand to family, friends, or anyone in his community who needed him. His strength, kindness, and steady presence touched the lives of many.
As a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, there are many memories of good times shared with Barbara and his friends. He also enjoyed road tripping and camping around the country in his RV. He was known for being able to fix almost anything and for offering steady and patient guidance as others learned to do things the right way under his direction.
Jim proudly served his country in both the United States Navy and the United States Air Force, retiring after 23 years of honorable service. Following his military service, Jim became well known for his hard work, integrity, and dedication to those he served as an automative service center owner. First as the original owner of Carter’s Corner Automotive Service Center in Buckroe Beach, Hampton, Virginia, and later after a strong desire to move to Roanoke Rapids, at Carter’s Corner Automotive Service Center in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
Jim will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his service to his country, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
A private memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to honor his memory may make contributions to Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
