Jesse Whitfield "Blackie" Ferguson

Jesse Whitfield Ferguson, 88, of Roanoke Rapids, died at The Hospice Home in Burlington on Monday, the 28th day of November, 2011.

He was the husband of Margie Hawkins Ferguson for more than 68 years. He was the son of Roland and Ida Carpenter Ferguson who preceded him in death.

He will be remembered by many people for his strong work ethic and friendliness. He was a master carpenter and often donated his time and skills to his family and those in need in the community. After retiring from the Halifax County Schools Maintenance Department, he was well known in the community and beyond for his bird feeders and other projects crafted from his woodshop. His loved ones will remember his never ending love and support of family.

He was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church where he greatly enjoyed the fellowship of the Mens Bible Class. In past years, he served as Chairman of Trustees and was on the Administrative Council where he was named as an Honorary Lifetime Member. He was named Lay Person of the Year and also received a Service Award for his efforts on behalf of the church.

In addition to his wife of the home, Jesse is survived by sons: Thomas of Lake Gaston and Jerry and wife, Kay, of Graham; grandchildren: Michael Ferguson and wife, A. J., of Raleigh, Scott Ferguson of Taylorsville, Amanda and husband, Brad Haveman, of Raleigh, and great-granddaughter, Camilia Ferguson of Raleigh.

He is survived by sisters: Dorothy Ferguson Nelms and husband, Richard; Jewel Ferguson Taylor, Sylvia Ferguson, and Mildred Ferguson, wife of deceased brother, Alfras. He is survived by brothers: Leroy Ferguson and Donald Ferguson and his wife, Joanie. He was blessed to be loved by many nieces and nephews whom he also dearly loved.

A funeral service will be conducted at Rosemary United Methodist Church by Pastor James D. Bell on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at 11 A. M. The family will receive friends in the Rosemary United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the memorial service. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Mens Bible Class at Rosemary United Methodist church, 900 Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, N. C. 27870.
