James Edwin Newton

James Edwin Newton, 75, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025.  Mr. Newton was born on December 14, 1949, the son of the late Bessie Virginia Green and Jennis Dow Newton, Jr.  He was also preceded in death by his brother William Earl Newton and Jessie Wayne Newton.

Mr. Newton was a huge NC State Fan, he loved to hunt, fish, woodwork, and basically anything with his hands.  He began working in the steel business with Howell Steel Company in 1968 and then with Weldon Steel in 1987, where he was still employed when he past.  He also served as a pilot with the Civil Air Patrol.

Surviving include his wife of 55 years, Katie Hawkins Newton; his daughter Jennifer Newton; his sister Bessie Faye Johnson; his sisters-in-law’s Brenda Newton, Nancy Hunnicutt, and Jimmie Taylor; his brother-in-law’s Haywood Hawkins and Gene Hawkins; his best friend Fred Draper; his dog Zailey; and many other nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.  Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Monday, September 15, 2025 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM and on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 from 10:00 AM until the funeral hour.
