James Thomas Long

May 28, 1941 — May 23, 2024

Roanoke Rapids

It is with great sadness that the family of James Thomas Long, Jr. announces his passing on May 23, 2024 at his home in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

James will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Martha “Bill" Vinson Long and his children, Renée Long Aman (Scott), Tommy Long (Lisa), Ann Long Languell (Chris). He will be cherished as "Yang Yang" and “Grandaddy" by his grandchildren, Courtney Renée Aman, Kelli Long, Emily Ann Aman, Christopher James Languell and Cole Long Languell as well as his great grandson, Cayman Luca.

James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret Long and his brother, William “Willie" Long.

James was born on May 28, 1941 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, however, he spent his younger years and many after on his family farm in Northampton County. Growing up and living on his farm instilled his love for the outdoors and his relentless worth ethic. James was the owner of Country Club Service Center for 32 years and also the owner of Long Trucking, Inc. Serving as president of Independent Garage Owners and North Carolina Service Station Association in Raleigh, James and Martha met many of their lifelong friends. James was active in the Roanoke Rapids community, not only as a business owner, but also serving as president of the Roanoke Rapids Exchange Club and developing the Roanoke Rapids Tourism Authority. He served on the Roanoke Rapids Planning Board, and James was one of the founding members of Halifax Harvest Days and the local Antique Tractor and Engine Club.

James enjoyed restoring classic cars, antique tractors, and vintage gasoline memorabilia. He loved attending car shows, spending time in the country, working in his yard and shop, spending time with his grandchildren, and with his faithful companions, Beau and Lola.

James leaves behind an amazing legacy of grandchildren in which he instilled integrity and fortitude by his unfathomable strength and character.

The Long family would like to recognize Dr. Mario Fiorilli and his nurse, Aimee Turner, for their unwavering care and support. We would also like to thank a special friend, Gina Williams, for the compassionate care she helped provide for James.

The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date in memory of James.
