Mr. Horace Cole Red Riggan of 1409 Williams Street, went to be with the Lord on March 1, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family.
Horace was born in Halifax County on October 21, 1923 to the late Richard and Anita Riggan. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Lillian R. Dever; three brothers, Irvin Riggan, Lynn Riggan, and Matthew Riggan. He was a World War II veteran where he was a demolition specialist and a proud member of the 82nd Airborne. He was a retired letter carrier with the US Postal Service in Roanoke Rapids with 28 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke Rapids for 62 years and served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Verdie DeBerry Riggan; one daughter, Sharon R. Cottle of Lake Worth, FL; one son, Jeff Riggan and wife, Ronda, of Roanoke Rapids; three grandsons, Brandon Cottle and wife, KC, of Lake Worth, FL,Matthew Riggan and Luke Riggan of Roanoke Rapids; two nieces, Marie Reeves Grant of Garysburg, and Jeannie Dever Geigan of Maryland and several great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Thursday, March 3rd from 6:30-8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held Friday, March 4th at First Baptist Church of Roanoke Rapids at 2:00 PM with Dr. Julian R. Mills, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.
