Eugenia "Jean" Rook

Eugenia Jean Rook, 92, of 2593 Thelma Road, Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Rook was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and was actively involved as a member of the United Methodist Women and also taught a Sunday School class. Among her hobbies, she loved to watch Carolina Mens basketball games. She enhanced her vocabulary and kept her mind sharp by working crossword and seek-a-word puzzles. In her earlier life she worked at the family business, Rooks Store located on Thelma Road. Miss Jean was dearly loved by her customers, community and her church family. She was born September 21, 1917, to the late James Rook and Ida Viola Robinson Rook and was also preceded in death by her husband, Hubert L. Rook, and a niece, Virginia Braswell Whichard. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra J. Rook, of Roanoke Rapids; three nieces: Elizabeth Ann Spivey of Jackson, Debbie Hudson of Richmond, Virginia, and Margaret Ann Pig Rook of Chapel Hill; three great-nephews: Michael Spivey of Rocky Mount, Chris Spivey and wife, Sissy, of Roanoke Rapids, and Randolph Whichard of Weldon; two sisters-in-law, Augusta Rook and Jean Rook both of Roanoke Rapids; a nephew, Bob Rook, of Roanoke Rapids; and other family members: Billy Cox and wife, Stuart, of Columbia, South Carolina, and is also survived by a much loved family dog, The Woman. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at New Hope United Methodist Church at 2 P.M. conducted by Rev. Sue Owens and Rev. C. J. Griffin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
