Elaine Abernathy Whitby

Elaine Abernathy Whitby, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at Nashunc Healthcare.  She was 73 years old.

Elaine was born in Halifax County on July 27, 1949, the daughter of Bennie and Mildred Davis Abernathy.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Green Whitby; and three siblings, Ronald Lee Abernathy, Nancy Finch and Dale Abernathy.

Elaine was a graduate of William R. Davie High School, and she also attended Halifax County Community College.  She was a member of Central Baptist Church for 40 years, and also attended Tabernacle Baptist Church.  Elaine was the owner of Roanoke Resale Clothing Outlet.  She also worked in the human resources departments for Roses, BB&T, and JPStevens.

She is survived by her daughters, Lesha Whitby Jordan (Gene Jordan, Jr), Crystal Whitby Bennett (Christopher Bennett); grandchildren, Ashton Victoria Jordan, Jessica Danielle Jordan, Mason Hunter Green Jordan; great-grandchildren, Kingslee Dickens, Layla Ford, Jessalyn Elaine Jordan; brothers, Donald and Ricky Abernathy; sisters, Joan Todd, Judy Myrick and Rose Abernathy; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Cllifton Riggan, Vivian Hurst, Walter and Betty Watts and David Jackson.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Monday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with pastors Wayne Marshall and Steven Tondee presiding.  Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
