Dorothy Salter Crew, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2019, in Raleigh, NC. She had previously lived in Roanoke Rapids, NC for over 60 years. She is predeceased by her husband of 33 years, William Lunsford Crew, the City Attorney, who died in October of 2004 and is buried in Skippers, Virginia at his old family church yard.

Her parents were Effie Gertrude and James Salter of Clubfoot Creek, NC, where she was raised on the farm with her five sisters, Hilda, Julie, Edna, Helen and Sibyl. Five brothers included, Osmond, Clarence, Dick, John and Elwood (Buddy).

Dot leaves behind her daughter, Patti Suggs of Raleigh, Sons Jim Harding (Marilyn)of Raleigh, Steve Harding (Shirley) of Orlando, FL, and Jeff Harding of Wilmington, NC.  She spent her summers in her beach house at Kitty Hawk entertaining her eight grandchildren, Hunter, Susan, Graham, Kylee, Beth, Will, Scott and Sam.

She was born Sept 21, 1928 on the family farm in North Harlow, NC by a mid- wife, who incorrectly reported her middle name as Elaine instead of Delaney. Dot was the thirteenth child by her Mother who passed away when she was 2. She was raised by her sisters and moved to Forest Hills NY at the age of 13 to live with her oldest sister Hilda and her husband Joe Patton. She graduated from Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, VA with an AA degree. She was married in Forest Hills, NY in 1949. And moved to Pittsburgh, PA. This is where Steve and Jim were born. Patti and Jeff were born in Roanoke Rapids.  Her short work history included being a Dental Assistant, Manager of the NC Welcome Center on Interstate 95 and a short stint at Halifax County Social Services as an Eligibility Specialist. In her personal life she enjoyed volunteering for Alter Guild service at All Saints. She also passed her knowledge to the younger women of the church by serving as the President of the Episcopal Church women one year.

Dot had been living in the Walton Woods Sr Retirement Community in Cary, NC for the past 5 years. She had just recently moved to an ALF facility in Raleigh.

Friends may visit with the family prior to the service on Saturday, from  1:00 – 1:45 pm, in the church parish house.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov.30 at 2 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, with burial following in Skippers, VA at Spring United Methodist Church cemetery.
