Clyde Paul Wheeler

d. May 7, 2013

On Tuesday, May 7, 2013, God sent an angel to Hampton Manor in Gaston to pick up Clyde Paul Wheeler and take him home. He triumphed over a long and valiant battle with Alzheimers disease.

Mr. Wheeler was born February 14, 1929, to the late Robert Burns Wheeler and Pauline Walker Wheeler Bartlett. He graduated from Hillsborough High School in the class of 1947, where he was selected one of the outstanding graduates of his class, was colonel of the ROTC, and Junior Rotarian.

His ministerial training began at Cincinnati Bible Seminary after which he transferred to Atlanta Christian College in East Point, Georgia, in his sophomore year and was president of his graduating class in 1951. He also served on their board of trustees for many years, including one term as chairman, and was selected as the distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 1994.

He held student ministries in Georgia and came to East Tenth Street Church of Christ to minister on May 18, 1952, where he remained until returning for additional schooling in Johnson City, Tennessee, graduating from Milligan College in 1960. While there, he served as the minister of the Hales Chapel Christian Church. He returned to East Tenth Street Church in August of 1960 and continued as minister until his retirement in 1999.

Mr. Wheeler was beloved not only by his family and his church family, but also by many in our community as he touched countless lives, not only through the hundreds of weddings and funerals he conducted, but also by his regular visits to the hospitals and kindness to anyone who needed him. He was a humble man who just went about doing good, never seeking the limelight.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only sibling, Wallace Wheeler, and his grandmother and aunt, who raised him: Nell Walker and Donnie Breesch.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna Jean Walker Wheeler; his son, Terry Paul Wheeler and wife, Shelia; his grandchildren: Laura Beth Pair and her husband, Joseph, of Roanoke Rapids, and Collin Wheeler of Cary; his great-grandchildren: Carter Ashton Pair and Finley Grace Pair; his Florida family: Nephew, Bobby Wheeler, and a special cousin, Pauline Polly Naylor and husband, Ray.

A celebration of his life will begin with an informal visitation at the Clyde P. Wheeler Fellowship Building at East Tenth Street Church of Christ on Wednesday evening, May 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M.

Continuing the celebration will be a service on Thursday, May 9, at East Tenth Street Church of Christ at 2 P.M., conducted by Dave Chapman and Greg Hand, ministers. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to: The Clyde P. Wheeler Preaching Scholarship, c/o Point University (formerly Atlanta Christian College) 507 West 10th St., West Point, GA. 31833, established and funded by his East Tenth Street Church family upon his retirement.

I have fought the good fight;

I have finished the race;

I have kept the faith;

Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service..
