Billy Wright Sam Jones, 74, of Highway 48, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Mr. Jones was born January 26, 1938 in Northampton County, NC to the late Benjamin Thomas Jones and Pearlie Davis Jones. He was also preceded in death by his daughter; Robin Jones Bell: brothers; Shernon Jones, L.C. Jones, Carl Jones and Curtis Jones: sisters; Irene Hodge, Nita Dean and Mary Jones: nephew; Ricky Jones: niece; Hilda Wheeler: nephew; Melvin Thompson.
Sam loved God first and foremost and then his family and friends.He was a member of Good Samaritan Baptist Fellowship in Roanoke Rapids.He was pappy to his grandchildren. He loved hunting, fishing and gathering tree bark for his tea. Sam also loved history, respected and loved the Indian culture, tanning his own hides the old fashioned way. He also made cedar furniture for his house.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 50 years Zettie Mae Hux Jones: two daughters; Lisa Barnes and husband Rusty of Charleston, SC and Pamela Jones of Roanoke Rapids: two granddaughters; Samantha Barnes and Brooke Barnes both of Charleston, SC: son-in-law; William Bell of Roanoke Rapids: four sisters; Helen DeBerry of Raleigh, NC, Lois Arwood and Ruby Daught Thompson both of Roanoke Rapids, Priscilla Downie and husband Lee of Lake Gaston, NC: five sisters-in-law; Jackie Jones, Nancy Evans, Janice H. Hales and husband Gene, Carol Moseley and husband and longtime caring friend Don and Cathy H. Keeter all of Roanoke Rapids: twenty-five nieces and nephews: longtime caring friends; Joe Joyner, Richard Mayton, Lloyd "Bug" and Ellen Edwards, Bahnson Nance, James Capps and Billy Culpepper.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Good Samaritan Baptist Fellowship with Dr. Dennis Gregory, Rev. Jimmy King, Dave Chapman, Minister and Rev. Ray McDonald officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 P.M. Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home. Burial will follow in Quankie Baptist Church Cemetery.
