Anne Matthews

Annie Willey "Anne" Matthews, 78, died June 1, 2021 at Vidant North Hospital.

Anne was born June 28, 1942 in Portsmouth, VA, a daughter to Claude Ruffin Willey, Sr. and Margaret Claudell Barnes Willey.

She was a retired bookkeeper for Jack Boseman Nationwide Insurance Company.  Anne volunteered at the Roanoke Valley Veterans Museum; enjoyed NASCAR racing; going out and dancing; and most of all, loved her family.

The family wishes to express a heartfelt "thank you" to the third floor staff at Vidant North, as well as to Dr. Gerardo Maradiaga, for the care and compassion shown to Anne and her family.

Anne is survived by her loving husband, James R. Matthews; her daughters, Sue Shearin (Timothy), Lori Robinson (Lester), Margie Shearin Esidro (Dion) and Claudia Clayton (Joseph); her grandchildren, Shannon, Brittany, Michelle, Ryan, Jarrett and Marena; and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Isaac and Alex.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, James R. Matthews, Jr., and brother, Claude R. Willey, Jr.

Friends may visit with the family  from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday evening at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

The funeral for Mrs. Matthews will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday in the funeral home chapel, with interment to follow in Old Cedarwood Cemetery.
